I’ve been a fan of Star Wars for as long as I can remember. My first memory is watching the opening of Return of the Jedi with my Mom. Ever since then, I’ve consumed Star Wars like it was going out of style.
This December the final film in the Skywalker Saga of Star Wars will be released. During the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, at the end of the Episode IX panel, the first teaser was released. And it’s with great joy that I’m able to share with you my thoughts on what we’ve just seen.
In these three photos we can see that Rey has rebuilt the Skywalker Family lightsaber and that it is in working order. We also get a glimpse of the pistol that Han gave her in The Force Awakens
The ignition of the lightsaber leads to Rey jumping over what looks to be the new TIE Interceptor. Not sure why the pilot didn’t shoot at her, but its a cool visual of Rey’s power none the less.
Here, we have the best two shots of Kylo Ren in the teaser. Pretty simple stuff: One of Kylo taking down a Resistance trooper in what looks like either an attack at sundown or on another Starkiller Base, and a shot of him rebuilding the helmet he destroyed in The Last Jedi.
These two shots look to be on the same planet and possibly the same one where Rey jumps over the TIE Interceptor. Not sure what’s going on but it’s a decent look at their outfits. It also shows us that Finn is carrying Rey’s staff.
This shot, along with the full shot of the Skywalker Family lightsaber, shows it’s extremely unlikely that Rey will build a poll arm lightsaber using the two weapons.
Not a lot to say about this other than Lando is back flying the Falcon in an outfit that looks like the one that Donald Glover wore as Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
I’m hopeful there is a nice reunion with the conciseness of L3-37.
Looks like we can add another cute droid into the mix. Let’s hope BB-8 and Dio have an unique relationship like C-3PO and R2-D2.
I have to admit this is the shot of the trailer that got me. Seeing Carrie Fisher back as Leia Organa made me tear up. It warms my heart to see the character back on the screen.
I know they’re using cut scenes from her past performances to bring her into Episode IX, and that this most likely was filmed during The Force Awakens for after Han’s death. But I do wonder what the reason is for Rey to be crying now.
Why is Leia holding the medal from the Battle of Yavin?
This is by far the most interesting shot of the whole trailer. The wreckage of a Death Star.
Based on how intact the wreckage is and the way the location looks, this appears to be the moon of Yavin 4. Though it is possible that it is the forest moon of Endor. But why are we going back here?
Here we are with the last two shots that caught my eye
from the trailer.
Lucasfilm has said that this will be the end of the Skywalker Saga. If that is the case, why is the final title The Rise of Skywalker?
Throughout the trailer, we have a narration from Luke telling Rey that they’ve passed on all they know and that 1000 generations live within her now. He also says that what is coming is her fight. We’re reminded that they will always be with her and no one is ever really gone.
And then, before the title reveal, we hear the laugh of Emperor Palpatine.
Right after the trailer was released, the Episode IX panel ended with Ian McDiarmid coming on stage to say only two words “Rise again.” This, of course, will lead to tons of speculation about Palpatine’s involvement in this film, and exactly what the title means.
Is Rey a clone of Palpatine or Luke? Is Rey the daughter of Luke? Is Rey another vergence in the force like Anakin was? Is that Death Star actually destroyed over Endor and not Yavin? Why would they track down the place where Palpatine and Anakin died? Is Matt Smith really playing a young Palpatine? Was Snoke Palpatine reincarnate?
While that last one is most unlikely based on what has been said about Snoke’s past, there are so many possibilities now.
I’m left with more questions than answers, and those answers cannot come fast enough.
