Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
There are some movies from the past that can show you what the culture was of that time. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is one of those movies. Set in 1988 and released February 17, 1989, it shows what life in the 80's was like, including the horrible hairstyles and the bad fashion. The movie goes so far as to have a rock band that replaces the I with a Y, which was common in the 80's. Now considered a cult classic, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure grossed $40.4 million domestically on a budget of about $10 million. Receiving poor to mixed reviews at the time, it currently sits at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. While it was able to get it a sequel in 1991, there is still enough love…

Lincoln Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
For as long as I can remember, I've been enthralled by the American Civil War. And Lincoln delivers an inside look into the reasons, the battles, and the people behind it. Fueled by the fight for slavery, the movie portrays just how divided the United States were at the time. The movie begins in January 1865, where we see President Abraham Lincoln speaking to the House of Representatives. Speaking to one of the biggest issues to effect slavery, he urges them to pass the 13th amendment during the final months of the Civil War. From there, the movie chronicles the ongoing debate in the House. And we also see Lincoln's responses to the peace talks with the Confederacy. This film immerses you into what it was like trying to get the…

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood Throwback Video Game Review

Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review, Video Games
When you see a development studio take a series to a yearly release, you almost expect the quality to drop. When Ubisoft Montreal released Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood almost a year to the day after Assassin's Creed 2, this was a worry. Though it turns out as unnecessary, as gamers often consider Brotherhood as one of the best games in the series. Continuing the story of Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood makes advancements on just about everything that came before. Side characters that we don't see much of in 2 make bigger splashes within Brotherhood. And the combat allows for quicker and more fluid battles. Characters The story of Assassin's Creed is set within two different time periods, giving us two sets of characters. The modern-day story is anchored by four characters, all…

Assassin’s Creed 2 Throwback Video Game Review

Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review, Video Games
There's only been a handful of video games that have touched me to the point that I have replayed them almost every year. Usually, those games come from my youth; games like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Rock 'n Roll Racing. Assassin's Creed 2 started to creep into that playlist when it released in November of 2009. While part of that replay comes from being an installment in a yearly series, the most significant part of my replays came from the mixture of my love of history and science fiction. Assassin's Creed 2 has two main settings. One, which we do not spend a lot of time in, is 2012 with Desmond from Assassin's Creed. This time, instead of revisiting the Third Crusade, he visits the Italian Renaissance and his…

Assassin’s Creed Throwback Video Game Review

Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review, Video Games
What would you do if you could relive the memories of your ancestors? What if you could see what other periods of history were like without having the point of view of the person who wrote the record? What if things were not the way you remember from the books? It is this idea that is one of the core story aspects of the Assassin's Creed series as a whole. In each game, we play a person in a modern setting that has a special connection to the past. Using a machine designed to relive significant world events, a connection is made to someone who lived them. The game that introduced this thought was the first in the series titled Assassin's Creed.   Historic Locations The story of Assassin's Creed revolves…

The Covenant Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
When I was in college, I would watch just about any movie that had a hard rock soundtrack. With White Zombie and Rob Zombie, 2006's The Covenant had one of those soundtracks. Much like SwimFan, The Covenant hit me at one of those times in my life that I look back on fondly. When I saw that it was on Netflix, I had to take the time to watch it. The story revolves around a group of friends who descend from four families that fled from Salem to Ipswitch during the Salem Witch Trials. Calling themselves the "Sons of Ipswitch," they each possess a power to do some fantastical things. After getting to know everyone within the town things start to happen. And that's where the film hits a multitude of film…

The Incredibles Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
I have noticed over the years that when I go back to watch a movie that I used to enjoy, I don't always see it in the same way or, often, I'll connect with different characters. Take Swimfan for example. I can remember watching it almost ten years ago and being entertained by it, but watching it recently I started to see the downsides to it more than I used to. This is something I noticed again during this week's family movie night when we watched Pixar's 2004 classic, The Incredibles.   The first time I remember watching The Incredibles, I connected with the children more than anyone else in the film. When it was released, I was barely 20 myself and connected with the interactions the kids had with their parents and understood…

In Time Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
Dystopia is a term we hear now and then but don't always realize what it truly means. Most of the time when we think of dystopian futures, we have thoughts of tyrannical governments, like in V for Vendetta, or worldwide calamities, like Waterworld shows. But there are some dystopian futures that we don't often think of, most notably one made by technology.  The most notable film with a dystopian technological future is The Matrix, but one that doesn't usually get looked at is the film In Time. In Time's dystopia comes from the population being genetically engineered to use time as a form of currency. Using time for currency allows the rich to live forever while the poor fight over mere minutes or days. It's an exciting concept that takes the term "time is money"…

Super Troopers Throwback Movie Review

Movie Review, Non Spoiler Talk, Throwback Review
When I was younger, there were a handful of comedies that I kept on a constant rotation. One of these comedies was Super Troopers. Having a wide release in 2002 after debuting at Sundance in 2001, and having a budget of about $3 million, it ended up bringing in $23.2 million at the box office. In its day, it would have been considered a box office success based on its budget and its box office return. Critics at the time, though, did not look at this film as highly as the audience did. If you check out the Rotton Tomatoes scores for Super Troopers, most critics rated it less than favorable with only 35% of them giving it a positive review. The audience, on the other hand, had 90% that gave it a…
